Save energy in your home quickly and easily. With the right furnishings and appliances, for example, you can quickly save hundreds of euros a year. With these tips, we’ll give you a hand in saving energy.

Pay attention to the sun

First a very simple saving: in autumn, winter and in spring, move your sitting area to where the sun enters your house. In summer, it is convenient to close your curtains blinds and shutters to keep the house cool. By doing so, you make the best use of the sun. Make sure you put solar panels on your roof to generate solar energy. Solar panels generate energy that you can use directly in your home. With solar panels you reduce CO2 emissions and combat climate change. You may be able to get a subsidy for installing solar panels.

Saving energy is not only good for your wallet, it also helps combat global warming.

Insulate your home

Make sure you have good insulation in your home. Consider cavity wall insulation, floor insulation, roof insulation and double glazing. Make sure you have good sun protection in the summer. Think about an awning, slats and blinds. Make sure you plug cracks and holes around windows and doors tightly with draft strips. Buy thick curtains and make sure the curtains don’t hang over the radiator.

Buy a modern and smart thermostat

Make use of a smart thermostat. You can also turn the thermostat down one or more degrees. Setting your thermostat one degree lower will save you 7% energy.

Don’t leave appliances on standby

Unplug devices so they are not on standby. Leaving plugs in an appliance costs a lot of money every year!

Buy modern appliances with low energy consumption

When your appliance breaks such as a washing machine or dishwasher, choose an energy-efficient new appliance. When your hot water appliance is broken, choose an energy efficient system such as a solar water heater an electric heat boiler heat pump water heater or a high efficiency boiler. Sometimes energy-efficient new appliances are more expensive to buy but the savings in use make more money in the long run.

Energy use in the home

This requires the most energy consumption in the home: Heating a room costs the most energy (50%+). A great savings is to take advantage of heating a small space. Try to live in this small space as much as possible. Heating water takes second place in home energy use, this is 15%. The third place is taken by cleaning (8%). These are the dishwasher, washing machine and clothes dryer. Cooling of food such as a freezer and refrigerator take the fourth place in energy consumption in the home. This is around 6%. The remaining energy consumption takes place in by lighting, audio and computers and other devices and finally food preparation and personal care. Should you own an electric car, it increasingly occupies a large part of the energy consumption.

Summarized:

  • Use energy-efficient lighting, such as LED bulbs.
  • Avoid standby mode on electronic devices.
  • Install a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust heating according to the time of day and the presence of people in the house.
  • Wash your clothes and use the dishwasher only when it is full.
  • Insulate your home to minimize heat loss.
  • Consider using solar panels or wind power to generate electricity.

Buy energy-efficient appliances

Appliances are becoming more energy efficient and energy friendly. When buying a new appliance, choose one with an energy efficient energy label. When buying a new appliance, pay attention to the size of the appliance. A small refrigerator or television uses less energy than a large one. Use appliances smartly; do not run a load of laundry until the drum is full, for example. When no one is watching television turn off the television. Try living more frugally. It makes you feel good.
