Red wine stain removal from clothing or tablecloth

First, dab away the wine with a cloth. Be careful not to rub or wipe as this will only make it worse. You can strain clothing or a tablecloth, pulling it over a bowl. This will allow you to reach the stain well. Try to keep the surface with the stain tight, possibly with the help of someone else or a rubber band. Next, sprinkle salt over the wine stain and let it soak in for about 5 minutes. The salt will now absorb as much of the wine as possible. Be sure to do this as soon as possible after the stain has occurred. After this, pour boiling water over the wine stain. Be careful not to get splashed against you.

It’s better not to pour boiling water on fine fabrics. In that case, use white wine vinegar. Make sure you remove the salt from the fabric and put a stain remover on it if necessary. Next, put your clothes or tablecloth in the washing machine and choose the hottest possible wash cycle. Make sure the program you choose is appropriate for your garment. Otherwise, the stain will have been removed but your garment will have shrunk. Keep in mind that the faster you treat the stain, the easier it will be to remove. Always try testing on an inconspicuous area before applying any of these methods to the stain.

Red wine stain removal from rug

Removing red wine stains from your rug is done as follows: first, dab as much wine as possible off the rug with a cloth. Be careful not to rub and wipe. If it is very much, use a spoon. Next, sprinkle a space amount of salt over the wine stain. Leave the salt for a while so that it absorbs as much of the wine as possible. After a while, vacuum up the salt with a vacuum cleaner. What can also be successful is to pour white wine or gin over the stain. You can also dab with cleaning vinegar.

There are a number of ways to remove red wine stains from a rug:

  1. White wine or vinegar: Immediately after the spill, pour a little white wine, gin or vinegar on the stain. This will help neutralize the wine. Then use a clean cloth to dab up the stain.
  2. Salt: Sprinkle salt directly on the stain. Let the salt soak in for a few minutes. Then use a clean cloth to dab the stain.
  3. Washing powder: Make a paste of washing powder and warm water. Rub the paste into the stain and let it soak in for a few hours. Then use a clean cloth to dab the stain.
  4. Soda: Make a paste of baking soda and warm water. Rub the paste into the stain and let it soak in for a few hours. Then use a clean cloth to dab up the stain.
  5. Professional cleaning company: If the stain cannot be removed by the above methods, it may be best to hire a professional cleaning company. They will have professional products and methods to remove the stains.

Keep in mind that the sooner you treat the stain, the easier it will be to remove. Always try testing on an inconspicuous area before applying any of these methods to the stain.

Red wine stain removal from wall

If you want to remove red wine stains from your wall, first dab the wall clean with a cloth. On a white wall, rub the wall clean with a scouring pad and some diluted bleach. A cloth with hydrogen peroxide will also sometimes help. Walls with removable wallpaper can usually be cleaned easily. In some cases there is no other way than to repaint or wallpaper your wall. You can also try white wine, salt, washing powder and baking soda as described above.

Take a cotton terry towel and wet it with cold water. Wring out the towel. Lay the towel as flat as possible on the wine stain and leave the towel for a while. If the towel turns completely red, get a new towel and do it again. Leave the towel until it has dried completely.

Dry red wine stain removal

If the red wine stain has already dried up, then salt will no longer help. You can then use detergent or bleach. Just be sure to use bleach only on white fabrics. Rub both agents on the stain and let it soak in for a while. Then put the garment in the washing machine.

Other tips:

  • What you can also try is to pour spa red, white wine, young gin or beer over the stain and let it soak in;
  • Try disinfectant hand gel for dried red wine stains;
  • Removing red wine from untreated wood such as a table or wooden floor can be done by smearing green soap on it. Let the green soap soak in and wipe it off with a damp cloth. Taking a more rigorous approach even involves sanding parts and waxing untreated wood. Read more about wood furniture cleaning and maintenance here.
  • Soak a garment in milk overnight.
“Never use alcohol, turpentine or benzene, that does even more damage”

If you do not succeed at all in getting your wall, carpet or clothes clean, you can always try to recover damages from your insurance company. In that case, contact your insurance company. Often there is a deductible.
